Is This The Gun Case The U.S. Supreme Court Will Take?

Is This The Gun Case The U.S. Supreme Court Will Take? – Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Heller v. D.C. (2008) that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms and then ruled in McDonald v. Chicago (2010) that this right also restricts state and local governments, the high court has opted not to hear cases that might further define gun rights. This has been a little surprising, as some lower courts have actually produced majority opinions that are critical of decisions reached by other courts. Such conflicts at the circuit level typically force the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in. A California case—Peruta v. San Diego County—might soon force the U.S. Supreme Court to settle some of the constitutional...

After Upstate NY prison break, requests rise for pistol permits

After Upstate NY prison break, requests rise for pistol permits – With two escaped killers on the loose, the Clinton County, N.Y., clerk’s office has seen a rise in the number of requests for pistol permits. “We typically don’t get more than one a day, but we probably have at least 12 this week,” said Mary Lavorando, of the Clinton County Clerk’s Office in Plattsburgh. “It seems like more people have been picking up applications,” she said Friday afternoon. “But it can take eight or nine weeks for approval. So it’s kind of like locking the barn door after the horse is...

Albany may require gun owners to lock up their weapons

Albany may require gun owners to lock up their weapons – City gun owners may soon be required to keep their firearms under lock and key at home. A proposed law vetted Monday by city lawmakers would force gun owners to store their weapons in a “secure container” or disable them with a trigger lock whenever they are “out of his or her immediate possession or control” at home. Gun safety advocates say the measure will help reduce deaths from accidental shootings and suicides, especially among children, but the leader of the state’s NRA affiliate said the law infringes on the Second Amendment right to bear arms and would almost certainly face a legal...

Two year rise in shootings prove SAFE Act not working

Two year rise in shootings prove SAFE Act not working Time for legislators to have an honest discussion about New York gun laws ALBANY, NY (06/08/2015)(readMedia)– The New York Times first reported last week that shootings in New York City have been rising for the past two years. This was followed by the NYPD reporting a 19.5% increase in City homicides during the first five months of the year. Now, according to WABC News Ch. 7, felony assaults on the subway are up 27%. Taken together it should be blindingly obvious now that New York’s new gun control laws are not doing what advocates said they would. “During the last election, Governor Cuomo ran political ads stating “The NY SAFE Act is saving lives,” NYSRPA President Tom King said.  “The results prove the exact opposite is happening. It is time for our elected officials to have an honest and open discussion on the SAFE Act and why states with less restrictive gun laws do not have these...
