Bloomberg gun-control group facing internal backlash amid growing profile

Bloomberg gun-control group facing internal backlash amid growing profile – New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is losing part of his arsenal of local leaders as more and more long-time members of his gun-control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns say they aren’t happy with the coalition’s trajectory and want out. While the group apparently is growing in membership overall amid an effort to assume a larger profile in the national gun debate, it’s turning some members off. In the past five months, 50 members of the group have quit. Many say they did so because the organization abandoned its mission statement of going after illegal guns, and instead used its political clout to go after lawmakers who supported gun rights. Most recently, the mayors of Rockford, Ill., and Nashua, N.H., dropped out after saying they felt misled by...

This freedom event will be a lollapalooza

This freedom event will be a lollapalooza – The Tri-County Fair at the Altamont Fairgrounds, which can be traced back to 1819, may turn out to be small in comparison when the Freedompalooza opens on Aug. 24.  A country music festival aimed at restoring our nation to the greatness our founding fathers had in mind by exposing the truth through music, speakers and vendors, the event will feature scores of country music bands — including several that have national recognition. An array of federal, state and local pro-second amendment politicians will also be present; politicians committed to defeating gun control laws designed at abolishing our right to keep and bear arms including the NY SAFE Act — an act gunowners hope will be nullified in the courts or repealed by a Republican majority of state Senate and Assembly...

Opt-out forms for pistol permit-holders available in Erie County

Opt-out forms for pistol permit-holders available in Erie County – Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs reminded pistol permit holders who have not yet completed their public records exemptions forms that his office is still accepting the opt-out paperwork.  Since the February implementation of the privacy provision in the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Act, Jacobs’ office has receive approximately 30,000 opt-out forms, from local residents.  “My office has collected opt-out forms from 50 percent of the over 60,000 pistol permit holders in Erie County,” Jacobs said. “I want to ensure that the remaining permit holders, who have not yet completed and sent in their privacy forms, know that my office will continue to accept...

Outdoors Notebook: Ontario, Wayne counties legalize big-game rifle hunting

Outdoors Notebook: Ontario, Wayne counties legalize big-game rifle hunting – Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation legalizing rifle hunting for big game (deer and black bear) in Ontario and Wayne counties, adding to a growing list. Of approximately 30 counties in western and central New York, only nine remain that ban the use of rifles, including Monroe, Orleans, Genesee and Livingston. A proposal to include Livingston failed again, but now that it’s sandwiched between Wyoming and Ontario, it will likely pass in the future. Rifle cartridges travel farther than shotgun slugs, so allowing rifle use for hunting has long been a controversial topic. But rifle users tend to be more safety conscious, proponents note, and statistics in counties where use of rifles was allowed on a trial basis showed no increase in...

In state’s gun debate, money still flows

In state’s gun debate, money still flows – More than six months after New York’s sweeping crackdown on gun and ammunition purchases, money from supporters and opponents is still pouring into the chief combatants in the debate, though for very different purposes.  New Yorkers for Gun Safety, a state Democratic Party political action committee ostensibly controlled by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, raised $408,000 in just 30 days, according to campaign filings made public this week.  That is considered a hefty sum by Albany standards – even more so because donations to policy causes typically dry up once a policy matter has been decided at the...
