Fight against SAFE Act continues – Gun-rights advocates have not stopped their battle against the state’s controversial SAFE Act. About a dozen people attended Monday night’s St. Lawrence County Legislature meeting to seek support for a resolution that calls on the state to repeal its Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013. County legislators voted 12-0 to support the...

SLC Lawmaker Renews Call To Oppose SAFE Act

SLC Lawmaker Renews Call To Oppose SAFE Act – Republican St. Lawrence County Legislator Joel LaPierre is calling for others on the board to once again stand up against New York’s strict gun control laws.  LaPierre says the SAFE Act, as it’s called, “treats countless New York state law-abiding gun owners as criminals.”  He says he plans to call for repeal of the legislation at Monday night’s county legislature meeting. He says the SAFE Act will have a significant financial impact due to the more than 17,000 county pistol permits that will need to be renewed.  The county legislature already voted to oppose the SAFE Act in February...

Ways & Means supports measure to repeal SAFE ACT

Ways & Means supports measure to repeal SAFE ACT – Genesee County Ways & Means Committee approved a resolution Wednesday to support repeal of the state’s gun control law, NY SAFE ACT.  The measure that passed Wednesday was not unexpected. County lawmakers have in the past voted on similar resolutions and voiced opposition to the SAFE ACT, enacted in January 2013.  The Ways & Means resolution stated the county’s support for a law, introduced this year in the State Senate, to repeal the SAFE ACT.  The Ways & Means resolution also supports introduction of the same bill in the State...

Sen. O’Mara pushes for SAFE Act repeal

Sen. O’Mara pushes for SAFE Act repeal – Whether you have guns for hunting, target shooting or personal protection, you are going to be affected one way or another by New York’s controversial SAFE Act gun control law. On the second anniversary of passage of the law, which you may recall was rammed through the state legislature in the middle of the night with no outside input, state Sen. Tom O’Mara, R-Big Flats, is cosponsoring a Senate bill to repeal the SAFE Act. O’Mara was one of 18 state senators who voted against the SAFE Act two years...

Nozzolio reintroduces bill to repeal SAFE Act

Nozzolio reintroduces bill to repeal SAFE Act – It’s a long shot, but state Sen. Michael Nozzolio is rebooting a legislative effort to repeal the SAFE Act, a gun control measure approved by the state Legislature in early 2013 and signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Nozzolio, R-Fayette, reintroduced his bill, S511, that would repeal nearly all of the law’s key provisions. The legislation has five cosponsors, including state Sen. John DeFrancisco and state Sen. Jim Seward. While polls show a majority of New Yorkers support the SAFE Act, the law has been criticized by gun rights groups and some legislators, including Nozzolio and others who represent upstate...

PBS: Obama Admin Trusted Manchin to Beat NRA on Gun Control

PBS: Obama Admin Trusted Manchin to Beat NRA on Gun Control – PBS’s new special, Gunned Down: The Power Of The NRA, makes it clear the Obama administration trusted Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) to beat the NRA on gun control in 2013. Manchin was the author of the much-touted gun control “compromise” bill which he and other Democrats pushed in the wake of the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary. According to PBS, “Obama decided to try to do something” following Sandy Hook and he knew he had to do it quickly, while “concern” and “attention” were elevated. Momentum seemed to be going Obama’s way until December 21, 2012, the day the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre gave a speech about good guys with guns stopping bad guys with guns, and it became clear the push to pass more gun control would have to be a...
