The Journal News is Armed and Dangerous

The Journal News is Armed and Dangerous – Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander. A Clarkstown police report issued on December 28, 2012, confirmed that The Journal News has hired armed security guards from New City-based RGA Investigations and that they are manning the newspaper’s Rockland County headquarters at 1 Crosfield Ave., West Nyack, through at least tomorrow, Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Ryan Talks Gun Control

Ryan Talks Gun Control – Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan is asking President Obama to put stricter gun control measures in place.  He and about 750 other mayors have written a letter to the President. They are asking that every potential gun buyer have a criminal background check run on them. Currently, some buyers avoid checks by buying guns on-line or through unlicensed private sellers. Mayor Ryan also says military style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines should not be allowed on the streets. And, he wants gun trafficking to become a federal crime. All of those ideas would require action by...

Phil Steck: Count me in for stricter state, federal gun control

Phil Steck: Count me in for stricter state, federal gun control – It’s not yet his first day on the job, but Assemblyman-elect Phil Steck says he’s fully on board with the push for tougher state and federal gun laws in the wake of this month’s schoolhouse massacre in Newtown, Conn. “There are inconsistencies that allow guns to cross borders and limit the effectiveness of state laws, but if legislation in New York can save even one life or prevent one tragedy, we should act immediately. Under the leadership of Speaker Silver, and with my colleagues in the Assembly, I look forward to working on this issue,” Steck said in a press release this...

‘Journal News’ advertisers face boycott over gun map

‘Journal News’ advertisers face boycott over gun map – The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is calling for a nationwide boycott of the advertisers of the suburban New York newspaper that published online maps revealing names and addresses of people with pistol permits.  The association on Monday announced it was urging people to stop patronizing any business who advertises with Gannett — the White Plains-based Journal News’ parent company — until the map is removed. On Dec. 22, the Journal News published interactive maps showing the pistol permit holders in the state’s Westchester and Rockland counties. The decision sparked an uproar among conservatives and gun rights advocates, but the paper says it will continue adding names to the...

Sheldon Silver: Microstamping Not Part Of Gun Package Talks

Sheldon Silver: Microstamping Not Part Of Gun Package Talks – Supporters of a microstamping, which makes  guns and ammo more trackable, fear their best chance of getting the Mayor Bloomberg-backed measure enacted into law is slipping away.  A gun control package being negotiated between Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders does not address microstamping—an issue Senate Republicans vehemently oppose despite its widespread support among law enforcement. “The Senate [Republicans] refuse to consider it,” said Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose house has passed a microstamping bill several...
