Cuomo, Astorino trade barbs over SAFE Act – Republican Rob Astorino has made his opposition to the state’s gun-control laws a key plank of his campaign, hoping to build support among gun-rights groups. But in recent days, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has released a flurry of ads knocking Astorino for an “ultraconservative” gun stance. “Rob Astorino supports bringing guns into schools and teaching students to shoot,” one mailer reads. The front of the mailer shows a school hallway with the message: “There’s a gun down this hallway.” Astorino has railed against the portrayal, and Astorino’s wife, Sheila, released a web video Wednesday chastising Cuomo’s attack ads, which are being funded through the state Democratic Committee. “You’ve really gone too far for this mom and schoolteacher. Telling people my husband wants guns in classrooms? Guns in classrooms? You can’t be serious,” she said.
