Freeman: ‘I guess I’m the only conservative on the council’ — Local gun rights supporters may have found an unlikely ally in Albany’s South End councilman. In Albany, where the city is run by an all-Democrat Common Council, certain things just seem automatic. So when Councilman Dominick Calsolaro offered a resolution last night backing the passage of federal law banning the production and possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines like those used in last month’s mass shooting in Tucson Arizona, I penciled in a “P” for pass next to the item on the agenda before the meeting even convened. Next to it, I wrote “15-0?” — expecting the possibility of a unanimous vote.  And, indeed, the measure did easily pass. But it wasn’t unanimous.  Lester Freeman, who represents the South End’s 2nd Ward, without explanation, logged the only dissenting vote.
