DiPietro starting effort to repeal new gun law - Assemblyman David DiPietro has started an effort to repeal the state’s controversial new firearms law.  DiPietro, R-East Aurora, is sponsoring a bill which would repeal the NY SAFE Act, effective immediately.  It has 11 co-sponsors but no counterpart has appeared so far in the state Senate.  “In the wake of the gross violations of the right to bear arms, the right to stand against improper search and seizure, and the right to due process on one of our citizens, Gov. Cuomo and the liberal left are allowing the provisions of the SAFE Act to continue to roll out,” DiPietro said in a news release issued April 15, the day the provision limiting the number of bullets allowed in a magazine became law.

Broome legislators pass resolution to oppose SAFE Act - Broome County legislative chambers reached capacity Thursday evening as concerned citizens filed in to applaud legislators in their decision to support a repeal of the NY SAFE Act.  With a final vote of 12-3, the advisory resolution did not come easy to all. A heated debate and several considerations preceded thunderous cheering from the crowd, many of whom were waving signs with the word "REPEAL."

Obama fires back as GOP threatens to derail gun control - The Obama administration is ratcheting up the pressure on Congress to pass comprehensive gun control legislation as cracks in a bipartisan deal begin to emerge. The administration’s hard line is an attempt to preemptively undermine GOP threats to filibuster any new legislation brought to the floor.

Cairo, Durham oppose SAFE Act - The towns of Cairo and Durham have joined New Baltimore and Greene County in passing a resolution stating their opposition to New York’s controversial gun control law known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act. The law, passed in January in less than a day using a message of necessity from Governor Andrew Cuomo, is one of the most restrictive guns laws in the country. It broadens the definition of banned “assault” rifles, imposes a seven-round limit on magazines, increases penalties for illegal gun possession, expands background check requirements, reduces public access to gun permit information and allows mental health professionals to report gun-owning patients they fear might harm themselves or others.
