More gun permits issued, but few revoked locally – The pistol permit application was one of hundreds Washington County Sheriff’s Office receives every year. But before the request made it through even the first phase of the approval process, the Sheriff’s Office’s pistol permit specialist noticed the application was on a list of people who are generally banned from owning a handgun. “They cross-checked him in the database and he was on the list of people who had received mental-health treatment, so he was denied,” Washington County Sheriff Jeff Murphy said. “There is a system of checks and balances and our people are very thorough.”
