Gun festival with picnic flavor

Gun festival with picnic flavor – Next to the vendor selling toy “bubble” guns, and across from the woman selling Mary Kay products, was a table filed with real knives. And a short walk from the field filled with inflatable rides, gun dealers set up tables filled with handguns and rifles. Barbecue sizzled, country music blared and fathers carried daughters on their shoulders as a wholesome scene played out Saturday at Hanofee Park. But the event was sponsored by Friends with Firearms and billed as a “gun festival.” At its heart was an effort to promote opposition to New York state’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act, the gun-control legislation passed earlier this year, and raise money for efforts to overturn the... read more

Safe Act spinoff: Local rod and gun clubs see spike in memberships – Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s controversial SAFE Act that passed at the beginning of this year has had one favorable side effect on local rod and gun clubs across Central New York. Memberships are up and the demographics of many of the new shooters may surprise some. They’re women. “Absolutely,” said Dave Simmons, president of the Baldwinsville Rod and Gun Club. “We’re seeing it across the board, with more females participating in our shotgun sports –skeet, trap shooting and sporting clays. Federal Gun Legislation Push

Organizing for Action and Mayors Against Illegal Guns are pushing for new federal firearm legislation. Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan, Councilwoman Lea Webb, and several others gathered at Confluence Park and walked to Peacemakers Stage, near the Court Street Bridge Friday afternoon. The group says a bi-partisan bill in the House calls for nearly universal background checks, including at gun shows and retail stores. Mayor Ryan says new federal gun rules are needed, because some states laws aren’t as strict as New York’s. The groups want Republican Congressman Richard Hanna’s... read more

Ridgeway says no to SAFE Act

Ridgeway says no to SAFE Act – The Town of Ridgeway passed its own resolution Tuesday night in opposition to the New York State SAFE Act, making Orleans County the first in the state to have all of its municipalities support the repeal of the act.  Dave Krug of Medina spoke to the board and said that as a law abiding citizen and an avid hunter, the SAFE Act would turn him into a criminal, along with many others like him.  “Many like me strive to teach others gun safety,” he said. “I feel this legislation was rushed into by a false message of necessity … stripping people of their constitutional... read more

Remington Arms scouts Middle TN after N.Y. bans its rifle

Remington Arms scouts Middle TN after N.Y. bans its rifle – One of the nation’s largest gun manufacturers, Remington Arms, has looked at sites around Nashville for a potential corporate relocation or expansion that would likely include hundreds of manufacturing jobs.  The Madison, N.C.-based company, which is part of the nation’s largest firearms company and has its largest plant in Ilion, N.Y., has scouted sites near Nashville’s airport, Lebanon and in Clarksville, Tenn.  Remington is among a growing number of gun manufacturers nationwide that have been courted by states pitching themselves as more gun-friendly. The wooing came after a handful of states, including New York, passed tougher gun control laws in the aftermath of last December’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and six... read more

USAMU Team Shoots Record 800-57X at 1000 Yards

USAMU Team Shoots Record 800-57X at 1000 Yards – Amazing. Spectacular. Stunning. Awe-inspiring. You choose the superlatives — but this is one team shooting performance that will long be celebrated. Competing in the Herrick Trophy 1000-yard Team Match at the Long Range National Championships, the USAMU Praslick 4-member squad turned in a performance for the ages, posting a record-breaking 800-57X score. That means that every one of the four soldiers shot a perfect 200 at 1000 yards. And the X-count was impressive as well. Recently-crowned 2013 National High Power Champion SSG Brandon Green nailed 15 Xs, as did his USAMU team-mate SGT Amanda Elsenboss. Nearly as good, SSG Ty Cooper had 14 Xs to go with his 200 score, while SSG Shane Barnhart notched 13 Xs.  The team’s combined 800-57X score is a new National Record. We commend all four shooters and their wind coach SFC Emil Praslick III. Well-done Lady and Gentlemen. This was a truly superior display of long-range marksmanship! As one fellow shooter observed at Camp Perry: “This is one record that will likely stand for a long, long... read more
