Obama fires back as GOP threatens to derail gun control – The Obama administration is ratcheting up the pressure on Congress to pass comprehensive gun control legislation as cracks in a bipartisan deal begin to emerge. Michael Bloomberg group’s gun-control scorecard will give lawmakers letter grades

Michael Bloomberg group’s gun-control scorecard will give lawmakers letter grades – New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, one of the nation’s most committed and deep-pocketed gun-control proponents, is ratcheting up pressure on lawmakers by launching a new system to grade them based on their votes and statements on gun issues.  Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the nonprofit group financed by Bloomberg (I), will unveil a scoring system Tuesday to award lawmakers grades of A through F, much like the National Rifle Association, which has derived much of its power by deploying letter rankings against politicians at election time. The group’s strategists briefed The Washington Post on the plans ahead of Tuesday’s... read more

Galway junior rifle team prepares to compete nationally

Galway junior rifle team prepares to compete nationally – “It takes an incredible amount of self discipline and concentration to really get good at it,” said Coach Chuck Boykin.  The teens on the junior rifle team range in age from 12 to 18.  “Shooting is a very mental sport. It’s 90 percent mental, ten percent physical,” Logan Ogden said.  It’s that intense focus that has Logan Ogden, 14, and Breanna Flint, 18, preparing for the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs this week.  “One target has ten bulls and you can get ten points on each bull. You want to try to hit that little tiny dot in the center to get a ten,” Ogden said.  Last year’s Junior Olympics winner in Logan’s category received a score of 576 out of... read more

Guns, ammo going quick: Local stores struggle to keep shelves stocked with ammunition as consumers stock up

Guns, ammo going quick: Local stores struggle to keep shelves stocked with ammunition as consumers stock up – Gun enthusiasts fearful of new weapon controls and alarmed by rumors of government hoarding are buying bullets practically by the bushel, making it hard for stores nationwide to keep shelves stocked and even putting a pinch on some local law enforcement departments.  At a 24-hour Walmart in suburban Albany, the ammunition cabinet was three-fourths empty this week; sales clerks said customers must arrive before 9 the morning after a delivery to get what they want. A few miles away, Dick’s Sporting Goods puts up a red rope after ammunition deliveries so buyers can line up early to get a number, averting races up the escalator to the gun counter. Both stores are limiting ammunition purchases to three boxes a... read more

He’ll also talk about regulations his office worked out with most of the state’s gun show operators after undercover operations in 2011 showed buyers could obtain weapons without going through required background... read more

Cairo, Durham oppose SAFE Act

Cairo, Durham oppose SAFE Act – The towns of Cairo and Durham have joined New Baltimore and Greene County in passing a resolution stating their opposition to New York’s controversial gun control law known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act. The law, passed in January in less than a day using a message of necessity from Governor Andrew Cuomo, is one of the most restrictive guns laws in the country. It broadens the definition of banned “assault” rifles, imposes a seven-round limit on magazines, increases penalties for illegal gun possession, expands background check requirements, reduces public access to gun permit information and allows mental health professionals to report gun-owning patients they fear might harm themselves or... read more

Putnam mom petitions county on SAFE Act opposition – The dialogue about gun reform that a Philipstown mother-of-two and 500 others wanted to have with their representatives in Putnam County government following the shooting deaths of 26 first-graders and teachers at a Connecticut school will take place instead in May. Alexandra Dubroff, 38, of Nelsonville, the organizer of a 500-name petition, has been appealing to Putnam County lawmakers to open the dialogue since February, when the county Legislature voted to oppose New York’s new gun reform law. The vote took place without public... read more

Gun-rights expert call local challenge to SAFE Act ‘significant’

Gun-rights expert call local challenge to SAFE Act ‘significant’ – In the marble-columned courthouse where five Supreme Court justices ruled that American citizens have the right to keep and bear arms, the gun-control law that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo calls the SAFE Act could one day find itself in grave danger.  The federal lawsuit filed in Buffalo earlier this month raises serious constitutional questions about several of the new law’s provisions, according to legal scholars who specialize in studying the Second Amendment – which guarantees gun rights – and who are familiar with the New York... read more
