Sheldon Silver: Microstamping Not Part Of Gun Package Talks

Sheldon Silver: Microstamping Not Part Of Gun Package Talks – Supporters of a microstamping, which makes  guns and ammo more trackable, fear their best chance of getting the Mayor Bloomberg-backed measure enacted into law is slipping away.  A gun control package being negotiated between Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders does not address microstamping—an issue Senate Republicans vehemently oppose despite its widespread support among law enforcement. “The Senate [Republicans] refuse to consider it,” said Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose house has passed a microstamping bill several... read more

Boycott Journal News Advertisers

Boycott Journal News Advertisers The Journal News has again published the pistol license holder list online for the lower Hudson Valley, this time with a searchable map. Below is a list of major/national and local advertisers who use the Journal News for their ads.  It is important that concerned citizens contact as many of these advertisers as possible.  A short letter which starts by quickly outlining the irresponsible Journal News act of publishing the names and addresses of pistol license holders (and a Google Maps picture with directions and family members names) would be best. State that you will no longer patronize any advertiser who uses Gannett unless and until that advertiser withholds further ads until Gannett takes down the pistol license page and ceases attacking lawful firearm ownership.  Particularly, contact advertisers with whom you already do business, and who may know you personally. The Journal News has put in harm’s way tens of thousands of lawful license holders.  This action by the Journal News can only be viewed as an attempt to intimidate and bully lawful gun-owning citizens.  The data posted also includes active and retired police, judges, battered and stalked individuals, FBI agents, and more. The Journal News has made no credible case, or any valid reason for releasing the data, and it serves no investigative or journalistic purpose. List of National and Local Advertisers – updated January 7, 2013... read more

On concealed carry gun issue, Illinois looks to N.Y. gun laws

On concealed carry gun issue, Illinois looks to N.Y. gun laws – As reluctant ruling Democrats face the daunting task of crafting state legislation to allow Illinois citizens to carry guns in public, they may need to look no further than the recent federal court decision that struck down the state’s longtime ban. In the ruling from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Richard Posner argues that instead of a complete ban on concealed carry, Illinois must follow other states that have struck a balance between public safety and the constitutional right to bear arms. He specifically points to New York, which has one of the most restrictive — and complicated — concealed carry laws in the... read more

‘Gun Control Fails,’ Say Statistics from … Gun-Control Advocates

‘Gun Control Fails,’ Say Statistics from … Gun-Control Advocates – After the Newtown, Connecticut mass murder, anti-rights politicians and media shifted into high gear. The only “solution” for such a tragedy was another gun ban; within two days, Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced her version. Pundits like the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein politicized the tragedy by claiming that America is an unusually violent place, with the only answer being more gun control. There’s a problem with all of their hyperbole: it is based upon myth and manipulated... read more

Stigmatizing Gun Owners Makes Civil Debate Impossible

Stigmatizing Gun Owners Makes Civil Debate Impossible – The decision of a newspaper in New York’s Westchester County to publish an interactive map that allowed readers to discover the names and addresses of owners of legal guns is generally being debated as one about whether the Gannett-owned Journal News showed good judgment. It didn’t, but the problem goes a lot deeper than whether or not a newspaper ought to publicize information that is legally available to the public in this manner. The controversy goes to the heart of the entire discussion about guns in this... read more

Pols renew their call for gun control in wake of tragedies

Pols renew their call for gun control in wake of tragedies – For state Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and state Senator Daniel Squadron, the push for gun control has been like a record on repeat. Back in October, both led the unsuccessful call for a legislative special session to pass laws strengthening New York’s restrictions on firearm sale and possession — already some of the strongest in the nation — and Squadron published an op-ed in the Daily News to argue the “common sense” perspective behind added gun control measures. “Before another drop of blood is spilled and another innocent life is lost, New York’s Legislature must do our job and pass these bills,” Squadron wrote in the... read more
