Sharp Increase In Pistol Permits In Erie County

Sharp Increase In Pistol Permits In Erie County – In the days that followed the mass shooting inside a Colorado movie theater, the Erie County Clerk’s office saw a sharp increase in the number of people filling out permits for pistols. In New York State, permits on handguns are processed in the clerks’ offices. Rifles and shotguns do not require such permits. 2 On Your Side analyzed the records and found a 21% increase (year to year) in applications filled out by new gunowners and a 49% increase in applications filled out by current gunowners who wanted to add additional pistols. “The facts are, we have had a significant uptick in the attempt to get more pistols,” Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs... read more

City’s gun business is fully loaded

City’s gun business is fully loaded – The Colorado shooting has again put the firearm industry in the national spotlight. It has also focused attention on the handful of New York City shooting ranges, shops and consultancies that have survived by dutifully playing by a complicated set of local rules designed to make gun ownership burdensome. Some have thrived on that complexity. Consultants and attorneys charge as much as $15,000 to help gun lovers like Donald Trump pack heat. “There are high-profile people as well as average businessmen who want a permit but don’t feel comfortable doing the process themselves,” said John Chambers, an attorney who helped start consultancy Gun Permits Inc. four years... read more

Gun control advocates target high-capacity magazines

Gun control advocates target high-capacity magazines – The Colorado theater shootings thrust assault weapons, such as the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle used in the rampage, into the national spotlight. Equally important in the gun control debate — and often overlooked — are the high-capacity magazines used to fuel the firepower in mass shootings, gun control advocates... read more

Michael Bloomberg backs a bill to ban online ammo sales

Michael Bloomberg backs a bill to ban online ammo sales – A bill sponsored by New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg and Long Island Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy that would effectively ban the online sale of ammunition has the backing of the nation’s loudest gun control advocate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “If the presidential candidates won’t act, others will—including Senator Lautenberg and Congresswoman McCarthy, who time and again have shown their steadfast commitment to protecting American lives,” said the mayor, in a... read more

Over-The-Top Gun

Over-The-Top Gun – Ben Swanson, 16, was nervous, doubted himself even, in the nights prior to the 2012 National Rifle Association National Rifle and Pistol Championships. But there he was, Camp Perry, an Ohio National Guard training facility on the shores of Lake Erie, and as he looked down the firing line at the competitors readying themselves for the 3-Position Any Sight Championship, those nerves and doubts somehow seemed to melt away. As the old saying goes, our worst fears lie in... read more

Sen. Peralta Calls For Bipartisan Gun-Control Law

Sen. Peralta Calls For Bipartisan Gun-Control Law – State Sen. Jose Peralta called for legislators to set aside partisanship to pass a new gun control law to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill. “Believe it or not, in New York State, a violent, mentally ill individual can keep a gun even after being identified by a court as a danger to society,” Peralta said. The legislation, Peralta said, would allow a judge to take away an individual’s gun license if that person is determined to be mentally ill. Currently, according to Peralta, the judge has an option to ask for the gun license, but this legislation would mandate... read more

Mayor Bloomberg spouts off for tight gun laws following Colorado movie theater massacre, but records show he’s showered thousands of dollards on lawmakers who drew high marks from gun lobby

Mayor Bloomberg spouts off for tight gun laws following Colorado movie theater massacre, but records show he’s showered thousands of dollards on lawmakers who drew high marks from gun lobby – Mayor Bloomberg has been all over the airwaves calling for better gun control following the Colorado movie theater massacre — but he doesn’t always put his money where his mouth is.  Even as he’s pushed for tougher gun laws, he has showered thousands of dollars on lawmakers who drew high marks from the gun lobby over the past decade, campaign finance records show.  And, his office announced Thursday that he’ll be hosting an Aug. 15 fund-raiser for Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown in the Bay State — where Bloomberg is from — despite Brown’s long history of supporting gun rights.  State Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long said the donations show that Bloomberg “is not a... read more

Concealed weapons save lives

Concealed weapons save lives – Friday’s horrible shooting in Colorado occurred in yet another place where guns are banned. And that’s consistent with a trend: With a single exception, every multiple-victim public shooting in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed since at least 1950 has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry their own firearms. If one of the hundreds of people at the theater had a concealed handgun, possibly the attack would have ended like the shooting at the mega New Life Church in Colorado Springs in December 2007. In that assault, the church’s minister had given Jeanne Assam permission to carry her concealed handgun. The gunman killed two people in the parking lot — but when he entered the church, Assam fired 10 shots, severely wounding him. At that point, the gunman committed... read more

Women’s gun show a big bang

Women’s gun show a big bang – The first annual Women’s Concealed Carry Holster Fashion Show in Churchtown Saturday was a well-received celebration of the Second Amendment and a showcase for women who carry guns.
